You Can Help Those in Need on #GivingTuesday
You have probably heard of Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days in the United States. Perhaps you have even stood in line for hours hoping to get a great deal or free item. There is also Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, two additional shopping days that help you get deals on gifts for your loved ones. After three full days surrounding commercialization, it is only fitting to designate a day to helping those in need, which is where #GivingTuesday comes in.
In 2012, #GivingTuesday was founded by New York’s 92nd Street YMCA in partnership with the United Nations Foundation to encourage and promote service, giving back and philanthropy during the holiday season. After all, isn't that what the holidays are about? #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Organizations all over the world use this day as a platform to promote the good work they are doing and to encourage support from the community to help them achieve their mission. Community members can support local nonprofits by volunteering time, making a cash or in-kind donation and sharing favorite organizations on social media.
